Inspired by the unique design of the Yeopjeon, a historic Korean brass coin with a square cut out that’s been a symbol of tradition for centuries, our handcrafted coaster is a blend of timeless artistry and contemporary charm as it was created using the traditional Ottchil (Korean lacquer) technique.
We start with the purest raw lacquer, carefully extracted from the sap of Toxicodendron vernicifluum trees. This precious substance undergoes a filtration and refinement process before being delicately applied onto handpicked pieces of Fraxinus chinensis—known for its impeccable quality. Each coaster receives six layers of lacquer, meticulously applied and dried each time.
The final layers are polished with soybean oil and calcified dear horn, bringing out radiant colors and creating a natural gloss finish. The color palette draws inspiration from the Saekdongot, a traditional Hanbok with vibrant stripes of patchwork, assembling an esthetically pleasing table setting that’s rich in culture—a perfect conversation starter for both the young and young at heart.

Instructions for Care
- To maintain its pristine appearance, avoid using abrasive sponges or sharp cutlery, which may cause unwanted scratches.
- For the best results, we recommend allowing your Ottchil-treated items to bask in light, unadorned (i.e., without any object on the surface), for 3–4 days before their initial use. This enhances and preserves the original intense colors.
Ottchil
In addition to its esthetic qualities and exceptional durability, Ottchil carries a rich history of utility in Korean craftsmanship. Ottchil’s unique coated film is a shield against spills and stains, making it the ideal choice for enhancing everyday objects such as cups, bowls, and plates. It even served as a clever alternative to refrigeration in years past. Ottchil containers double as natural preservatives, keeping food fresh owing to their moisture-proof, waterproof, and insect-repellent properties. Today, Ottchil continues to be coveted as a natural and eco-friendly technique, offering long-lasting finishes on a range of surfaces like wood, metal, porcelain, and even paper.
